Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress #1) – Finally taking the world of Cat and Bones for a spin again

Halfway to the grave, night huntress, Jeaniene FrostFor the record, I probably would have started this series a long time ago. It’s just that my first exposure to Jeaniene Frost’s writing included a spin-off book from this series that left a LOT to be desired. It took a while to build up the nerve to give her stuff another shot.  But thankfully, this particular book has a  more of what I’m looking for in an awesome vampire read.  My experiences were like night and day!

This series follows Catherine Crawfield, a half-human/half-vampire who takes it upon herself to dole out vigilante justice against vampires with the hope to meet her vampire father and put him on the business end of her stake.  She runs into the wrong (or right) vampire, Bones, who shows her that she is truly no match for what she’s up against. Being a vampire bounty hunter himself, he forces her into a partnership to take down fanged big bads together.  And so begins the story of the beloved Cat and Bones team.

I thought this was a really good start to the series.  Cat’s character starts out pretty self-righteous and angry, but she’s left questioning everything she believes in, which is good for character progression. I can see why Bones has a lot of fans. I found him very entertaining all throughout. I’m not an insta-love fan, and I do believe they get together a little too quickly here, but knowing that the whole series involves them allows me to be  a little more accepting of the dynamics. It’s at least good to know that not everything will be easy for them. I do worry that they’ll become stale for me since I usually become more attached to ships with better build up, but I am keeping an open mind.

I laughed quite a bit at the countless euphemisms and innuendo. They were effective even when I was in a bad mood and placed well enough so as to not become annoying.  The end really amped up the action which I totally loved. The carnage was awesome and I enjoyed seeing Cat and Bones as genuine badasses!

I purchased a copy of the book that contained bonus material with deleted scenes.  A lot of it felt really repetitive to what I’d already read and only a couple of developments added to the story.  The rest is forgettable, which is why it wasn’t included in the first place.

I definitely recommend at least giving this series a try.  It’s not a favorite of mine quite yet, but I definitely will be reading the next one ASAP.

  1. I just wanted to say that I’m so gold you gave the Night Huntress books another try. I absolutely loved her books and can’t wait for more. Jeaniene Frost is another favorite author of mine. She’s right up there with Kim Harrison. After you finish those books check out The Night Huntress World series. First Dropof Crimson is the first book. It tells how Aladdin and Denise got together and stuff. I don’t want to give anything away so Im not saying anymore. The second book is Eternal Kiss of Darkness. Then there’s her other series and I can’t remember the name of the series and I don’t want to wake my daughter up getting it, the name of the newest book is Once Burned. I loved them all and I can’t wait for more. I’m glad you gave it another try and I think you wont regret it.

    • Thanks. I actually will probably skip the NHW books because I read Eternal Kiss of Darkness already and didn’t like it.

      • Erika I think after you continue reading the Night Huntress series you will realize you have questions. I will say that Jeaniene is really good at keeping you in the dark with questions. The farther you get into the series you will have questions, a lot. You probably didn’t like the 2nd book in the series Night Huntress World because you didn’t read the series your reading now, The Night Huntress books. The deeper you continue 4esding them you will find yourself wanting, and a must know more about certain characters. I guess that’s why if there’s 4or5 books in the series I try to read them back to back before reading out of order. I never ever read a book out of order. That’s just me I guess. I always start with the first book in a series and never out of order. Ok,OK, you get the point, I get it. Try again if you can make it through this series and this series does get so much better.

        • Ohh and I just seen where o made a mistake on my phone. On First Drop of Crimson it said it tells you all about Alladin and Denise. It should say Slade and Denise.LOL.

        • Thanks! But the thing is, I’m super picky with PNR, and I think out of order or not, I wasn’t really feeling the connection or believability of the love story between Mencheres and that girl he ended up with. Part of my problem with One Foot in the Grave was the introduction of the side characters who I didn’t grow attached to. I hope that turns around because in general I’m a big fan of side characters in literature. I’m reading the third book now and it is going better than the second book for me (because of the story, not the side characters), but for some reason it’s not pulling me in like my favorites: The Hollows, Fever, Dorina Basarab, and of course Kate Daniels. It feels a tier or so below those for me right now because by the third book I was hooked on all of the above. Granted, I really loved the heroines there too, and so far I don’t love Cat. I think for the NH books, it helps that they are pretty short because if they were the length of a Hollows book I’d probably question if I could continue.

  2. Keep going…Bones and Cat make a great pair. Then you’ll have to check out the latest spin-off series—Vlad & Leila!

    • Already on book 4, so no worries. Cat keeps the pair from being a favorite because I find I don’t like her much, but I don’t mind reading the series for everything else. I do plan to read the Vlad book, but I I’m not going to bother with Spade’s book. I didn’t like Mencheres’s book and that was supposedly the better of the two, so I won’t waste my time.

      • I would have to totally disagree with you on that. The book First Drop of Crimson is by far better than the second book Eternal Kiss of Darkness. Also in my opinion its even better than. Once Burned, about Vlad. Once Burned left me hanging but the second book will be out soon so maybe that book will clear things up bit I doubt it. Jeaniene Frost has her way of leaving you hanging, not to mention with tons of questions. The book with Spade and Denise is a really good book. Don’t take my word for it, read it for yourself and find out. If you decide to let me know what you think. You said you were going to read Once Burned if you do let me know what you think about Vlad series. I said Vlad series because that’s who there about basically.

        • I am just going by what other readers have told me (at least three have insisted it’s the worst of the two) as well as its average rating on Goodreads which is lower than EKOD. But I know that’s not always law. I don’t always agree with the majority. Often times I don’t actually, lol. I didn’t like One Foot in the Grave nearly as much as the first book, though that one has a lower GR rating. Actually, I like the third book the best so far (may or may not review it though). It has the same rating as the second book, though Book 4 (what I’m reading now) has the highest. As for Night Prince, I am debating if I will wait to read it closer to its release date, but I don’t think I am attached enough for a cliffy to bother me too much, especially since everybody has prepared me for it.

Oh and if you celebrate it, Merry Christmas!

          December 25, 2012 at 12:11 AM

          • Sorry about that, Merry Christmas. Tomorrow will be a long day I’m sure. Well its already tomorrow.LOL. I’m not going anywhere though. I’m staying home. There’s so many family members that have to work today on Christmas so we wont all get together until the. 29th. If we don’t get our car fixed we wont be going anywhere. Ohh well, that’s all for another time and place. Merry Christmas Erika and to everyone.

        • It turned midnight as I was writing my responses, so that’s why it hit me, lol. I’ll be on the road tomorrow (or today rather) but I hope you and yours have a wonderful day!
